What I Treat Most Often in the Postpartum Period

The postpartum period—sometimes called the “fourth trimester”—is one of the most intense transitions a person can go through. Between physical recovery, hormonal shifts, identity changes, and the constant needs of a newborn, there’s a lot happening all at once.

In my work as an acupuncturist, herbalist, and former Labor & Delivery nurse, I’ve supported countless postpartum people through this vulnerable and powerful time. Some patterns show up again and again, and I want to share them here—not just so you know you’re not alone, but so you know there’s help available.

Here are the most common issues I treat postpartum:

1. Mommy Thumb (a.k.a. De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis)

Wrist and thumb pain is incredibly common from the repetitive motions of holding, feeding, and caring for a baby. Acupuncture and Tui Na bodywork can reduce inflammation and promote healing, while also addressing tension in the forearm and upper body.

2. Deep Exhaustion

Yes, new parents are tired—but many describe a kind of deep depletion that doesn’t go away with one good nap. In East Asian medicine, this often reflects Qi and Blood deficiency. We use acupuncture, herbs, and food therapy to support postpartum energy and recovery.

3. Neck + Shoulder Tension

Feeding posture, babywearing, and the mental weight of parenting all show up in the shoulders. Acupuncture and bodywork provide fast relief and help retrain your body to let go of stress.

4. Low Milk Supply or Flow Issues

Whether you're looking to increase milk supply, resolve a clog, or support weaning, acupuncture and herbal medicine can help regulate lactation and reduce pain or inflammation in the breasts.

5. Anxiety, Mood Swings, and Overwhelm

Sleep deprivation + hormone changes + constant responsibility = a nervous system that needs support. Acupuncture is a gentle but powerful way to calm anxiety, support mood regulation, and reduce emotional overwhelm.

6. C-Section Scar Sensitivity

If you’re experiencing scar tissue discomfort—tightness, numbness, or tingling—there’s help for that, too. Scar therapy with acupuncture and hands-on techniques helps restore sensation and circulation.

7. Night Sweats + Hormonal Swings

Waking drenched in sweat? Feeling dry, hot, or moody? These are signs of yin or blood deficiency—very treatable with East Asian medicine.

8. Digestive Upset

Constipation, bloating, and sluggish digestion are common after birth. Acupuncture and herbs can gently restore gut function, which is key to postpartum healing.

9. Feeling “Touched Out”

Even if you love every snuggle, the constant physical contact can feel like too much. Treatment gives you time to reconnect with your own body and fill your own cup.
