Leaving Nursing After a Decade for Four Years of Acupuncture Training

Hello, I’m Brianna Darcey, a Registered Nurse (RN) with over 15 years of experience, including a decade in Labor & Delivery. Today, I’m proud to be an acupuncturist in Oakland, where I blend Western and Eastern medicine to provide comprehensive care. This is the story of why I left my hospital career to pursue acupuncture and how I’m using both disciplines to enhance my patients' health and well-being.

Why I Left My Hospital Career to Go Back to School

For over a decade, I was deeply committed to my nursing career. Working as a Labor & Delivery nurse was incredibly fulfilling, but I began to notice the limitations of the hospital setting. The fast-paced environment often left little room for personalized care.

A profound experience with East Asian Medicine changed everything for me. I saw how acupuncture and integrative medicine could address not just physical symptoms but also the emotional and spiritual aspects of health. This inspired me to embark on a four-year master's program at the Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley. It was a bold decision, but one that felt right for my passion and purpose.

My Early Love for Birthing and the Midwifery Model of Care

My journey into the world of birthing began when I was just 13 years old. I begged my parents to let me work at my aunt's free-standing birth center during my spring break, and they finally agreed. It was there that I fell in love with the birthing process. This early experience shaped my appreciation for the midwifery model of care, which emphasizes personalized support throughout the birthing process.

Acupuncture, I’ve found, is wonderfully aligned with the midwifery model. Both approaches prioritize the whole person and emphasize natural, patient-centered treatment. This alignment further solidified my decision to integrate Eastern practices into my work.

What I Love About Acupuncture That Was Missing from Nursing

Acupuncture offered me a way to connect with patients on a deeper level. In nursing, time constraints often meant I couldn’t always provide the individualized care I aspired to give. Acupuncture allows for longer sessions where I can focus on the whole person.

I love how acupuncture treats the root causes of issues, not just the symptoms. The holistic approach resonated with me, and I found it incredibly rewarding to see significant improvements in health and well-being. The ability to spend more time with each patient, listen to their stories, and tailor treatments to their unique needs has been deeply satisfying.

How Acupuncture Fills the Gap in Western Medicine

Western Medicine excels in many areas, particularly in emergency and acute care. However, I noticed gaps, especially in chronic conditions and overall wellness. Postpartum care, for example, often lacked the comprehensive support that new mothers needed. Acupuncture and integrative medicine can fill these gaps by offering treatments that address a wider range of health issues.

Acupuncture can effectively manage pain, reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance overall wellness. It provides an alternative for patients who might not respond well to conventional treatments or prefer a more natural approach. By incorporating acupuncture into my practice, I can offer a broader spectrum of care that complements traditional Western methods.

Reflecting on My Journey

Reflecting on my journey from nursing to acupuncture, I feel incredibly fulfilled. Integrating Western and Eastern medicine has allowed me to provide more comprehensive and effective care to my patients. I encourage everyone to explore the benefits of integrative medicine and consider acupuncture as a complementary approach to their health.
