Supporting your body’s readiness for labor through prenatal acupuncture, moxibustion, and gentle bodywork in the final weeks of pregnancy.

I’m Dr. Brianna Darcey, DAIM, LAc, RN — a licensed acupuncturist and former Labor & Delivery nurse offering labor preparation acupuncture in Oakland and throughout the East Bay. I work with people in the late stages of pregnancy who want thoughtful, non-invasive support as they approach birth.
Is Labor Preparation Acupuncture Right for You?
Labor preparation acupuncture may be a good fit if:
-
You are 36 weeks pregnant or later
-
You are approaching or past your due date
-
You want to support relaxation, energy, and readiness for labor
-
You are working with a midwife or OB and want complementary care
-
You value care from someone with clinical labor & delivery experience
-
You want gentle support without medical induction or pressure

People seek labor preparation acupuncture for many reasons — physical, emotional, and energetic — and sessions are always tailored to where you are in your pregnancy.
What Is Labor Preparation Acupuncture?
Labor preparation acupuncture is a form of prenatal acupuncture used in the final weeks of pregnancy to support the body’s natural transition toward labor.

Rather than forcing labor to begin, treatments focus on:
-
Supporting the nervous system
-
Encouraging relaxation and circulation
-
Supporting pelvic balance and comfort
-
Helping the body shift from “holding” to “ready”

Many people choose acupuncture weekly starting around 36–37 weeks, and some increase frequency if they are post-dates or preparing for a scheduled induction.

Acupuncture is not a medical induction, but it can be a meaningful way to support the conditions that allow labor to begin naturally.
What to Expect in a Labor Preparation Session
Each session is adapted to your individual pregnancy, health history, and stage of labor preparation. A typical appointment may include:

-
Pregnancy-appropriate acupuncture points chosen for late pregnancy
-
Moxibustion when indicated (including support for optimal fetal positioning)
-
Gentle hands-on bodywork for comfort and pelvic balance
-
Time to check in emotionally and physically as birth approaches
-
Space to slow down, rest, and connect with your body

Sessions are designed to feel calming, supportive, and respectful of where you are — physically and emotionally.
When to Start Labor Preparation Acupuncture
Typical timing:

-
36–37 weeks: Weekly labor preparation sessions
-
39+ weeks / post-dates: 2–3 sessions per week if desired
-
Before a scheduled induction: Some people choose labor preparation acupuncture in the days or weeks leading up to a scheduled induction. While acupuncture cannot guarantee the onset of labor, it may support relaxation, circulation, and cervical readiness — helping some people either begin labor on their own or arrive at their induction with a more favorable cervix.

If you are unsure when to begin, I’m happy to help you decide what timing makes sense for your situation.

FAQ
Q: Can acupuncture help me go into labor?
A: Many people use acupuncture in late pregnancy to support relaxation, circulation, and readiness for labor. While it is not a medical induction, it can be a supportive part of a holistic approach as your body prepares for birth.
Q: Is acupuncture safe late in pregnancy?
A: When provided by a licensed practitioner trained in prenatal care, acupuncture is considered safe in late pregnancy. All treatments are chosen specifically for this stage.
Q: What if I’m past my due date?
A: Post-dates acupuncture is common. Some people choose more frequent sessions after 40 weeks to support their body during this time.
Q: How quickly will I notice changes?
A: Everyone responds differently. Some people notice shifts in relaxation, sleep, or physical sensations after one session, while others benefit from a series.
Q: Can acupuncture replace medical induction?
A: No. Acupuncture is complementary care and does not replace medical recommendations from your provider.
Appointments & Location
I see clients at my Oakland office and offer home visits throughout the East Bay, including Berkeley, Alameda, and surrounding areas.

Because availability can be limited in the final weeks of pregnancy, I recommend booking as early as possible if you are interested in labor preparation acupuncture.

"Brianna's acupuncture seemed to do the trick! I saw her for labor preparation before a scheduled induction. When I showed up for my induction, I was contracting every 3-5 minutes regularly and I was a few centimeters dilated/effaced. My baby was born the next day after just an hour of pushing. We’re all healthy and happy! I can't thank Brianna enough!"
